Prince William plays polo as baby watch heats up

LONDON (AP) ? His wife may be due to have her baby soon, but Prince William isn't one to sit tight and wait for the news ? instead, he's off playing polo.

Many in the British press have predicted that the first child of the prince and the Duchess of Cambridge, formerly known as Kate Middleton, is expected to arrive on Sunday. Dozens of bleary-eyed photographers and cameramen have been standing guard around the clock on royal baby watch outside St. Mary's Hospital in London.

But the prince was enjoying a game of polo with his brother Prince Harry at a charity match at Cirencester Park Polo Club, almost 100 miles (161 kilometers) west of the capital, on Sunday.

William appeared relaxed and was seen greeting locals who went up to meet him in footage broadcast on Sky News.

According to bookmaker William Hill, most people are betting money on a royal birth Sunday, Monday or Tuesday.

Officials have said that the baby is due around mid-July, but have not released a due date. The birth, when it does come, will be announced by a bulletin posted on a wooden easel placed outside Buckingham Palace.

It's a time-honored royal tradition ? the birth of William's father, Prince Charles, was announced the same way in 1948. This time, however, officials have adapted to modern times by adding a simultaneous announcement on Twitter, so that millions around the world can get the news within seconds.

Rupert Adams, spokesman for William Hill, said that the most fervent betting has been on the name of the baby. Alexandra, Charlotte, Elizabeth and George are among the top contenders so far, he said.

Cory Monteith, star of hit show 'Glee,' found dead

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) ? Cory Monteith, the heartthrob actor who became an overnight star as a high school quarterback-turned-singer in the hit TV series "Glee" but had battled addiction since his teenage years, was found dead of undisclosed causes in a hotel room, Vancouver police said. He was 31.

Police said Sunday that an autopsy is expected to take place Monday to determine the cause of death. Acting Vancouver Police Chief Doug LePard said late Saturday there was no indication of foul play.

The Canadian-born actor, who played Finn Hudson on the Fox TV series about a high school glee club, was found dead around noon Saturday in his room on the 21st floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel on Vancouver's waterfront, according to police.

Monteith had openly talked about struggling with addiction since he was a teenager, saying he had a serious problem and took just "anything and everything." He told Parade magazine in 2011 that he was "lucky to be alive."

In April, Monteith checked himself in to a treatment facility for "substance addiction" and asked for privacy as he took steps toward recovery, a representative said at the time. It was not his first time in rehab. He received treatment when he was 19.

Lea Michele, his "Glee" co-star and real-life girlfriend, told People magazine at the time that she loved and supported him and was proud he was seeking help.

Michele was requesting privacy after receiving news of Monteith's death, said her representative, Molly Kawachi of ID-PR .

"We ask that everyone kindly respect Lea's privacy during this devastating time," Kawachi said in in an email to The Associated Press.

Monteith's body was found by hotel staff who entered his room after he missed his check-out time, LePard said. Monteith had checked into the hotel on July 6.

"We do not have a great deal of information as to cause of death," said British Columbia Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe. She said further tests would be needed to determine how Monteith died.

LePard said Monteith had been out with people earlier and that those people are being interviewed.

Video and electronic records from the hotel indicate Monteith returned to his room by himself early Saturday morning, and he was believed to be alone when he died, LePard said.

Lapointe said he had been dead for several hours by the time his body was found.

Several "Glee" cast members took to Twitter to express their feelings.

"I have no words! My heart is broken," Dot-Marie Jones, who plays football coach Shannon Beiste, said in a post on her Twitter account Saturday night. She called Monteith a "hell of a friend" and an "amazing" man.

Noah Puckerman actor Mark Salling said Sunday he was "going through a million memories and emotions today."

Lauren Potter, who plays Becky Jackson, the cheerleader with Down Syndrome, tweeted that she feels "totally heartbroken right now."

"I love Cory so much this hurts my heart," she wrote. "I hope my Glee family is OK right now. I love them all. Cory was always so nice to me. I have so many good memories."

Harry Shum Jr., who portrays dancer Mike Chang on the show, expressed disbelief on Twitter.

"This tragic news still doesn't seem real to me," said Shum. "I love you, Cory."

John Stamos, who appeared as a guest star on several episodes of "Glee" tweeted: "Heartbreaking. RIP Cory. We talked about how lucky he felt to be alive-and sober. We talked about playing drums. Glad i knew you Cory." Monteith played drums in a California-based indie rock band Bonnie Dune.

Matthew Morrison, who plays glee club coach Will Schuester, issued condolences before performing at a Sunday afternoon show at the cabaret 54 Below in New York, according to the New York Times. The newspaper said he changed his opening number to sing an a cappella rendition of "What I Did for Love" from the musical, "A Chorus Line," which was featured during the second season of "Glee."

"You guys came to see a show, I came to perform a show, so that's what we'll do," he said, according to the newspaper. "And we'll do it in Cory's honor."

The Times said Morrison went on with a set of show tunes and jazz standards, dancing on stage and quipping with the audience about the infamous drug-den history of the space under the 1970's club, Studio 54, where the performance took place.

Fox and the producers of "Glee," including 20th Century Fox Television, called Monteith an exceptional performer "and an even more exceptional person. He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously."

"We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss," his representatives at Viewpoint Public Relations in Los Angeles said in a statement.

Monteith, who turned 31 on May 11, starred in "Glee" as a high school football player who puts his status and popularity at risk to join the glee club and its outcast members.

The show, with its pop music-based song-and-dance numbers and high-profile guest stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, became an immediate hit and made stars of its relatively unknown cast.

The series, which debuted in 2009, is in its fourth season.

On his Twitter account, Monteith described himself as "tall, awkward, canadian, actor, drummer, person."

He had recently shot a Canadian film called "All the Wrong Reasons," slated to be released later this year with actors Kevin Zegers, Karine Vanasse and Emily Hampshire.

In a 2010 interview with The Associated Press, Monteith was upbeat about life. He said that if "Glee" were to be canceled he would be OK.

"I've never been afraid of working," he said. "I've never been afraid of auditioning for jobs. Obviously, I've never been afraid of anonymity. I was happy (before 'Glee'). I'm happy now. I guess I'm well adjusted."

Monteith was among the "Glee" actors who remained series regulars as their characters graduated high school and moved on to other adventures. However, in real life Montieth dropped out of high school in Vancouver after his parents divorced.

According to his biography on Fox's website, Monteith was born in Calgary, Alberta, and moved to Vancouver Island as a child. Before turning to acting, he held a variety of jobs including Wal-Mart greeter, school bus driver, roofer and cab driver.

"Thanks for always being kind Cory. You came a long way from hanging on the beaches in Vancouver with the gang pre-Glee," tweeted Gerard Funk, an actor from Vancouver who joined the "Glee" cast last year.

Monteith's TV credits included roles on the series "Kaya" and "Kyle XY" and guest appearances on "Smallville," ''Supernatural," ''Stargate," ''Flash Gordon" and "Interns." His film credits included "Final Destination 3," ''The Invisible," ''Deck the Halls" and "Whisper."

His big break came when he submitted an audition tape to the "Glee" producers in Los Angeles and then raced straight down the Pacific Coast in his car from Vancouver when he was invited to meet them in person.

"I nailed it. I knew I nailed it," Monteith recalled about his audition in an interview with Canadian TV columnist Bill Brioux. "When you walk in to the room, the heads of Fox ... of course it's a little unnerving. Then you realize they're all waiting for you. It's kind of flattering in a way."

Monteith was an avid supporter of Project Limelight, a Vancouver charity that offers a theater and arts programs to at-risk youth. He dined with Project Limelight co-founder Maureen Webb at a Vancouver restaurant just days before his death.

In a Globe and Mail interview last year, Monteith credited Webb for suggesting that he enroll in acting classes when he was 19 years old and going down a "very dark path."

He kept in touch with Webb and made a video to support Project Limelight when the charity was launched last year.

"I think kids really need a place to go and feel like they belong," Monteith said in the video posted on Project Limelight's website. "When I was a kid, I struggled a lot with who I was and where my life was going and what I was interested in. And I was fortunate to have the arts inspire me."

Outside Vancouver hotel, fans paid tribute to Monteith by leaving notes, flowers and stuffed animals.

Helen Slater, 16, who was visiting from England, said she was shocked to hear about his death as she placed a note and a stuffed moose because he had once been photographed wearing moose antlers. She called him a "positive influence" and said "Glee" helped change her life.

"Nothing's going to be the same anymore," she said. The show "just put me (through) some really tough times, and helped me through depression a lot."

Appeals court upholds Trinidadian's conviction in N.Y. airport bomb plot

By Nate Raymond

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court upheld the conviction Friday of a former leader of the Shiite Muslim community in Trinidad and Tobago for his role in a conspiracy to bomb New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Imam Kareem Ibrahim, 68, was unable to sway the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York to reverse the 2011 guilty verdict on terrorism-related charges or the sentence of life.

Prosecutors said Ibrahim provided religious instruction and support to the group planning the failed attack, which involved destroying buildings, fuel tanks and pipelines at JFK.

The federal appeals court said a jury was entitled to find Ibrahim and his co-conspirators guilty of planning to blow up the airport.

The ruling followed a decision in May upholding the convictions of co-conspirators Russell Defreitas and Abdul Kadir, who were found guilty in August 2010 and also received life sentences.

A fourth man charged in the case, Abdel Nur, pleaded guilty in June 2011 and received a 15-year prison sentence.

Prosecutors said Ibrahim joined the plot in May 2007 after meeting with Defreitas and a confidential FBI informant in Trinidad. Ibrahim among other things gave them advice on avoiding attention by U.S. authorities, prosecutors said.

He was arrested in Trinidad in June 2007 and extradited to the United States. A jury in Brooklyn, New York, found him guilty in May 2011 on five terrorism-related counts.

On appeal, Ibrahim's lawyers argued their client's testimony was improperly limited, that evidence seized from Kadir's home shouldn't have been admitted, and that there wasn't enough evidence to support his conviction. They also challenged his sentence as unreasonable.

But the three-judge appellate panel rejected all of his arguments and upheld the sentence.

Michael Hueston, a lawyer for Ibrahim, said his client was considering whether to seek further appeal, including a petition for review by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Egypt's Islamists take to streets of Cairo, but protests peaceful

By Yasmine Saleh and Mike Collett-White

CAIRO (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of Egyptians marched on Cairo's streets in the early hours of Saturday to demand ousted Islamist President Mohamed Mursi be reinstated, but there were none of the deadly clashes that swept Egypt a week ago.

Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood called on Friday for "a day of marching on", and 10 days after the military overthrew Egypt's first freely elected president, large crowds descended on the capital waving flags and chanting slogans.

A week earlier similar scenes of protest turned violent when pro- and anti-Mursi demonstrators clashed in cities and towns across the country, killing 35 people and widening the rift between Egyptians on different sides of the political divide.

Three days after that, Egypt was left reeling again when soldiers opened fire on a group of pro-Mursi demonstrators outside the Republican Guard compound in Cairo where he is being held, killing 53. Four soldiers also died.

The powerful military blamed the confrontation on "terrorists". Mursi's supporters call it a massacre and say those who died were praying peacefully when troops opened fire.

As midnight passed in Cairo, large crowds of Brotherhood supporters were still out. Near the Ministry of Defence, hundreds of demonstrators standing behind barbed wire shouted at soldiers standing a few dozen meters away.

"I am here to say 'no' to the military coup and 'yes' to Mursi, who I see as my legitimate president, although I am not in the Brotherhood and nor did I vote for him," said Ahmed Adel, a 22-year-old student, in downtown Cairo.

The army denies Mursi's overthrow was a coup, saying it ousted him to enforce the will of the people after millions took to the streets at the end of June to demand his resignation.

The Brotherhood contends it is the victim of a military crackdown, evoking memories of its suppression under autocrat Hosni Mubarak, toppled in an uprising in 2011.

But many of its opponents blame Islamists for the violence, and some have little sympathy for the demonstrators who died, underlining how deep the fissures in Egyptian society are.

DEFIANCE AT VIGIL

At a Cairo mosque where Mursi supporters have held a mass vigil for more than two weeks, crowds swelled as people were bused in from the provinces, where the Brotherhood has strongholds.

Amer Ali, a member of parliament who spent 13 years as a political prisoner under Mubarak, made the five-hour car journey from Assiut in the Nile valley with his wife and two children.

"We're here and we're not leaving," he said. "We came with our kids to support legitimacy, democracy, and ... the first freely elected president in the Arab world."

People squirted water from bottles to cool each other down. Dozens rested in the shade of tents, dozing or reading the Koran, conserving energy during the Ramadan fasting month when Muslims refrain from food and water during daylight.

Passions sometimes ran high.

"They killed our martyrs while they were praying!" screamed Soraya Naguib Ahmed, tears down her face visible through the slit of her full-face veil, referring to the clash on Monday.

Mursi remains in detention at the compound outside which the shooting took place, and judicial sources said he was likely to be charged soon, possibly for escaping prison during the 2011 uprising when authorities arrested many Brotherhood leaders. Mursi could also be charged for corruption or links to violence.

Asked whether Washington agreed with the German Foreign Ministry's call for Mursi to be released, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said: "We do agree."

She declined to say if the United States had officially conveyed its wish to Egyptian officials and the military.

Egypt's foreign ministry said in a statement it was committed to a political "road map" drafted by the army which sets out a timetable for fresh parliamentary and presidential elections, possibly within months.

In reaction to international calls for Mursi's release, it added that Egypt's interim authorities would not revert to any "exceptional or illegal measure."

SINAI CONCERNS

The unrest has raised fears over security in the lawless Sinai peninsula bordering Israel and the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

Militant groups in North Sinai have promised more attacks and urged Islamists to take up arms in the region, which is near the Suez Canal, a vital waterway linking Asia and Europe.

The state-controlled Al Gomhuria newspaper ran a front page headline: "Sinai's Purification Operation in Days", referring to expectations the army would launch an offensive against militants in the region.

There have been almost daily attacks and skirmishes between radical Islamists and police and soldiers in Sinai since Mursi's ouster, some of them deadly.

Overnight on Friday, gunmen fired on a security checkpoint near the Suez Canal, but security personnel repelled the attack.

Mohab Mamish, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, told Reuters the shooting had no impact on the flow of ships.

"The Canal is very well secured and the attack was away from it and any of its administrative buildings," Mamish said.

The Suez is vital to Egypt's economy, decimated by two and a half years of turmoil since Mubarak was toppled.

Foreign reserves and wheat stocks are running low, although financial aid of $12 billion from three wealthy Gulf states is likely to ease the crisis in the short term.

In the longer term, the transition from the military-backed interim authorities to an elected parliament and president will be crucial to Egypt's stability.

Interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi said on Friday he had named center-left politician and lawyer Ziad Bahaa el-Din as his deputy, and he expected to swear in a cabinet next week.

Florida on guard for post-Zimmerman unrest

Published: Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 5:16 p.m.
Last Modified: Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 5:16 p.m.

Police and city leaders across Florida say they have taken precautionary steps for the possibility of mass protests or even civil unrest if George Zimmerman is acquitted in the killing of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin, particularly in African-American neighborhoods, where passions run strongest over the case.

For months, officials in Sanford and South Florida have been working with pastors, youth coaches, community activists and summer camp counselors to stress a non-violent approach if Zimmerman walks free.

At the same time, police say they have quietly been making plans for dealing with any potential emotional flare-ups that could quickly turn into storefront-smashing, car-burning riots.

In Gainesville, a rally will be held Saturday to pray for Trayvon Martin's family and to urge Gainesville and Alachua County residents to remain peaceful in the wake of the trial's outcome.

Organized by the Rev. Milford Griner, president and founder of the Rosa Parks Quiet Courage Committee, the Gainesville rally will be held at 6 p.m. at Bartley Temple United Methodist Church, 1936 NE 8th Ave.

Griner said the rally will be held to pray for Trayvon Martin's family, to pray for strength for Trayvon's parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, and to pray for peace in Gainesville and Alachua County if Zimmerman is acquitted.

Zimmerman, who is white and Hispanic, is charged with second-degree murder in the Feb. 26, 2012, shooting death of 17-year-old Martin, who is black, in Sanford.

"We are going to start with prayer and then we are going to get input and feedback from the different organizations that will be represented, and then we will get feedback from the audience," said Griner, adding that the rally will last approximately one hour.

Meantime, Gainesville Police Chief Tony Jones said he's counting on a constructive reaction locally regardless of the trial's outcome in Sanford.

"We as a community can stand fast in our resolve to overcome and learn from these tragic events," Jones said of the shooting death of Martin.

"Regardless of the verdict ? I am confident that this community will choose to voice their concerns through our churches, media, town hall meetings, and with elected and non-elected community leaders," Jones said in a Speaking Out column that appears on today's Sun editorial page.

Griner, who organized a Gainesville march and rally for Martin last year and a tribute earlier this year to recognize the one-year anniversary of Martin's death, said Saturday's rally in northeast Gainesville is important to him because Martin's death affected him emotionally.

"This is a young man who I feel didn't have to die," said Griner, senior pastor of Pleasant Plain United Methodist Church in Jonesville. "So for me, as a Gainesville resident and as a father and grandfather, I feel it is important for all of us who were affected in different ways to come together."

Darry Lloyd, president of the African American Accountability Alliance of Alachua County, said he will participate because it involves an important issue. He said too many serious issues get "lost in conversations," and it is important to involve as many people as possible in discussions about issues that affect the black community locally, statewide and nationally.

"We need folks to be involved on all levels," Lloyd said. Using a track-and-field analogy, Lloyd said there "a lot of sprinters and not enough long-distance runners" fighting for civil rights today.

"We need distance runners in the new civil rights movement," Lloyd said.

As for possible protests statewide in the wake of a verdict, the Rev. Walter T. Richardson, longtime pastor and chairman of Miami-Dade County's Community Relations Board, which has been holding town hall-style meetings about the case, said, "It's all right to be vocal, but we don't want to be violent. We've already lost one soul and we don't want to lose any more."

Martin is from the suburb of Miami Gardens. He was in Sanford visiting his father and father's fiancee when Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, fatally shot him during a physical confrontation in a gated community in February 2012.

Martin's supporters portrayed the shooting as racially motivated, while Zimmerman, who identifies himself as Hispanic, claimed self-defense. Charged with second-degree murder, Zimmerman pleaded not guilty at the trial unfolding in a Sanford courthouse.

After police initially refused to arrest Zimmerman, there were many large but peaceful protests in both Sanford and the Miami area ? as well as in New York and other cities. Those demonstrations included a mass walkout at nearly three dozen South Florida high schools.

Many in Sanford say they doubt the trial's outcome would spark local residents to take to the streets.

"The main focus was to get Zimmerman arrested and have him tried before a jury of his peers in a court of law," said Clayton Turner Jr., president of the Seminole County branch of the NAACP. "That was the main issue, not how we felt about whether he's innocent or guilty."

Is Sony teasing a new PS4 IP?

Sony has released a new picture on its official Facebook and Twitter feeds that could suggest a new IP for the upcoming PS4 console.

The picture, which bears the tagline ?When Worlds Collide?, could be the first hint towards a new PS4 IP after the image was posted on the official PlayStation Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Showcasing what looks to be one planet eclipsing another surrounded by some kind of purple hue, Sony has yet to offer any other information on the potential PS4 title.

Some are suggesting that it could be an effort to promote Dust 514 as the same slogan was used on an issue of Edge to promote the game back in 2009 when it was originally announced.

This was to advertise that Dust 514, a huge online multiplayer shooter for the PS3, was connected to the Eve Online universe.

However, seeing as the game was released in May last year, it seems a little strange that Sony wouldn?t include a reference to the game along with the posted image.

Playing host to platform exclusive games such as DriveClub, Knack and Killzone 4: Shadow Fall, it would be nice to see more PS4 exclusives to rival the Xbox One?s 15 exclusive titles.

PS4 Features
The PS4 was originally announced back in February at a dedicated Sony event, but the Japanese electronics manufacturer decided to keep the console?s design a secret until E3 2013.

The annual games conference set the stage for both the PS4 design and UK price reveal, which let slip that the Sony next-gen console would be a full ?80 cheaper than the Xbox One at ?349 to its ?429 price tag.

Sold without its PlayStation Eye peripheral, Sony has managed to keep the PS4 price low to attract consumers. The reduced cost, coupled with a real focus on being a next-generation games console rather than an entertainment hub could see the PS4 take the top-seller crown come launch.

Next read our pick of the best PS4 games.

India, China plan to hold Navy, Air Force exercises

NEW DELHI: Seeking to strengthen mutual trust between their armed forces, India and China are planning to hold exercises between their navies and air forces also in the near future.

The armies of the two countries already hold exercises between them code named Hand-to-Hand. Its third edition would be held in Chengdu military region of China in October.

During the recent discussions, the two sides have agreed that there should be exercises between the Navies and the Air Forces also, sources told here.

The initial exercises would be elementary in nature but later on, their level can be increased, they said.

The schedule of the exercises and their time-frame would be decided in the meetings between the armed forces of the two countries, they said.

Both sides have also agreed that the navies and air forces of both countries will undertake enhanced professional exchanges, the defence ministry had recently said during the visit of defence minister AK Antony there.

The two sides have also agreed to enhance ties between the military headquarters and exchange more number of young officers to enhance mutual trust.

Armies of India and China held their first exercises in 2007 at Belgaum in Karnataka with plans to hold such events annually. Similar exercises were held in 2008 at China's Kunming city.

The drills were later disrupted over China's new policy of granting visas on piece of paper to residents of Jammu and Kashmir. China also denied visa to a top General of J&K-based northern command after which India called off military contacts.

Doctors: Randy Travis in congestive heart failure

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Country music star Randy Travis is showing signs of improvement but remains in critical condition with congestive heart failure because of a viral illness, doctors said Wednesday.

Drs. William Gray and Michael Mack of the Baylor Health Care System in Texas described Travis' condition and hospitalization in a video statement.

"His condition has stabilized, and he has shown signs of improvement," Mack said in the video. "On behalf of Mr. Travis' family, friends and associates, we would like to express our extreme gratitude for the overwhelming affection and support that Mr. Travis has received."

The 54-year-old Grammy Award-winning singer was in good health until three weeks before he was hospitalized, when he contracted a viral upper respiratory infection, Gray said.

The viral illness led to a weakened heart muscle that eventually worsened into heart failure.

Travis was admitted to Baylor Medical Center McKinney near his home in Tioga, about 60 miles north of Dallas, through the emergency room on Sunday. The singer underwent a procedure to have a pump inserted by catheter that helps increase blood flow before being transferred to The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano.

The North Carolina-born Travis is a traditional country purist who is a pivotal figure in the genre best known for his hits "Forever and Ever, Amen" and "Three Wooden Crosses." His Warner Bros. debut album "Storms of Life" sold 3 million copies and helped return country music to its roots.

The illness comes as Travis has been trying to put his life back together after a series of embarrassing public incidents involving alcohol. Travis pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in January following an arrest last year and received two years of probation and a $2,000 fine. He was required to spend at least 30 days at an alcohol treatment facility and complete 100 hours of community service.

He recently made several public appearances, including a spot on the Country Music Association Festival's nightly concert lineup and a poignant performance at George Jones' funeral.

His peers and fans have been watching Travis' progress closely.

"I always feel like he's part of our family, he's in our family," Keith Urban said Wednesday morning. "And I was one of those guys in Australia that bought 'Storms of Life' and became a Randy fan very quickly in late '80s, and I really feel for him right now."

Three-time Grade 1 stakes winner Smiling Tiger retired | Washington Thoroughbred Owners Association

It was announced on July 4 that WTBOA Sales poster horse Smiling Tiger has been retired from racing and will stand the 2014 breeding season at Premier Equine Center in California for a $5,000 fee.

A six-year-old son of Hold That Tiger out of Federal Way Handicap winner Shandra Smiles, a daughter of leading Washington sire Cahill Road, Smiling Tiger was bred in Kentucky by Dr. Rodney Orr, of Silverton, Oregon.

Orr consigned him through Halvorson Bloodstock Services LLC to the 2008 WTBOA September yearling sale where trainer Jeff Bonde purchased the chestnut colt for $40,000 for Alan Klein and Philip Lebherz.

A stakes winner in each of his four seasons of racing, Smiling Tiger placed in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes as a two-year-old in the first two what would be 16 graded stakes placements. At three he won both the Grade 1 Bing Crosby and Ancient Title Stakes and placed in three other Grade 1 races, including a third in the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Sprint. For his efforts, he was among the three finalists for the 2010 Eclipse Award sprinter title. At four, the speedy colt added his third Grade 1 triumph in the Triple Bend Handicap and he made his final start a winning one when he came home on top by a length in the Vernon O. Underwood Stakes run at Betfair Hollywood Park last December.

All in all Smiling Tiger made 23 starts while under Bonde's care and amassed a 9-2-8 record. His final earnings of $1,480,704 places him at the top of all horses to have gone through the WTBOA sales ring.

Tornado Wallace: "Desperate Pleasures"

There may be no finer beard in the world of beardo disco than that of Australia producer Lewie Day, who works as Tornado Wallace. After a handful of singles on the Delusions of Grandeur imprint and a psychedelic house single from earlier this year on ESP Institute, Wallace?s first single for Beats in Space builds from a sputtering drum machine set to 102 BPM. Slowly, Wallace lets that primitive beat accumulate chunks of sawed cello, arpeggiated synths, and even a gnarl of electric guitar near the break, making for a track that feels Balearic and tropical, chill even if coated in equatorial sweat.

In case after case, big wins for big business this year at the Supreme ...

Pablo Martinez Monsivais / AP file

In this photo taken Oct. 8, 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court justices pose for a group photo at the Supreme Court in Washington.

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News

The blockbuster final week of the latest Supreme Court term delivered rulings across the ideological spectrum: The justices extended benefits to gay spouses, upended the Voting Rights Act and preserved affirmative action in college admissions, at least for now.

But as legal scholars take a step back and examine the term in full, they say the court leaned unmistakably to the right ? and came down consistently on the side of big business.

The justices made it more difficult to bring class-action suits against companies, raised the bar for workers to win discrimination claims and protected pharmaceutical companies against people who say they were harmed by defective generic drugs.

?This is a court that is making life easier for business,? said Stephen Wermiel, who teaches constitutional law and a seminar on the Supreme Court at American University in Washington, D.C.

The rightward shift follows a pattern set by Chief Justice John Roberts, who was appointed in 2005 by President George W. Bush and who, at the relatively young age of 58, is likely to lead the court for a generation.

There have been high-profile exceptions, like the court?s decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, the 1996 law that blocked federal recognition of gay marriages authorized by states.

But in general, the Roberts court has aggressively moved the law in a conservative direction on questions of business, politics and access to the courts, said Tom Goldstein, the publisher of SCOTUSblog and a Supreme Court analyst for NBC News.

?It?s not that they have an ideological agenda,? he said. ?It?s that they have a majority.?

A review of Supreme Court decisions in the 2012-2013 term shows win after win for big business.

The court sided with American Express in a dispute with restaurants and retail stores. The merchants wanted to pursue a class-action antitrust case, arguing that AmEx was leveraging monopoly power to charge inflated fees.

The justices said the merchants were bound by an arbitration agreement with American Express and had to pursue their claims individually that way, even if it was more expensive.

?The antitrust laws do not guarantee an affordable procedural path to the vindication of every claim,? Justice Antonin Scalia wrote in his majority opinion.

In another antitrust case, the justices ruled in favor of Comcast, the parent company of NBC News, and against a group of cable subscribers who said they were being overcharged. Scalia wrote that opinion, too, and found that customers representing ?four theories of liability and 2 million subscribers located in 16 counties? had been improperly certified as a class by a lower court.

In a pair of 5-4 decisions about the workplace, with the five most conservative justices in the majority, the court made it more difficult for workers to sue their employers for alleged harassment or bias.

One of those cases involved a black catering worker at Ball State University who said that she had been threatened and taunted by the white woman who oversaw her everyday work.

The court held that the university was not liable because the white woman was a coworker, not a supervisor. To be considered a supervisor in discrimination cases, the court said, someone must have the power to fire, demote or discipline the worker.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, reading her dissent aloud from the bench, said that the court had ignored the reality of the workplace and embraced ?a position that relieves scores of employers of responsibility for the behavior of the supervisors they employ.?

In the drug case, another 5-4 ruling by the conservative majority, the Supreme Court held that makers of generic drugs cannot be held liable for defects if the federal government approved the name-brand version.

The ruling overturned a $21 million award that a New Hampshire jury ordered for a woman who took a generic drug for shoulder pain in 2004 and suffered a rare reaction. She was blinded, and the outer layer of her skin burned off over most of her body.

In one measure of the strong term for corporations, the Chamber of Commerce was on the winning side for 14 of the 17 cases in which it filed briefs, and a perfect 8-0 in closely divided cases, according to the Constitutional Accountability Center, a liberal group. The center has found that the Chamber is winning much more often than it did 30 years ago.

Taken together, the cases heard and decided by the court this term show that business law ? specifically, limiting regulation and legal action against companies ? is a priority for the chief justice as he leads the court, legal analysts said.

Roberts wrote the opinion in a victory for the Royal Dutch Petroleum Co., ruling against Nigerian plaintiffs who wanted to sue in American courts for alleged human rights violations overseas.

?A lot of this is about the chief,? said Pamela Harris, a former Obama Justice Department lawyer who is now senior adviser at the Supreme Court Institute at the Georgetown University Law Center. ?He has real concerns about the over-litigation of businesses. That comes through loud and clear.?

Israel passes military draft bill

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's Cabinet has approved a plan that would gradually end a contentious system that has granted automatic draft exemptions to Jewish ultra-Orthodox seminary students.

Under a longstanding system, thousands of young men are allowed to skip compulsory military service to pursue religious studies. This has caused widespread resentment among secular Jewish Israelis.

The new system, which needs parliamentary approval, would reduce the number of exemptions and require ultra-Orthodox men to register for service. It would go into effect in three years.

The draft was a central issue in January elections and propelled Yesh Atid, the secular rights party behind the new regulations, into the government.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday the law will be implemented "gradually."

Ultra-Orthodox religious leaders condemned the decision, charging it would infringe on their lifestyle.

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood calls for uprising

CAIRO (Reuters) - The Muslim Brotherhood called on Egyptians to rise up against those who "want to steal" the revolution, a statement by its political wing said on Monday, after the Health Ministry said 35 people were killed in shooting outside the Cairo headquarters of the Republican Guard.

"(The Freedom and Justice Party) calls on the great Egyptian people to rise up against those who want to steal their revolution with tanks and armored vehicles, even over the dead bodies of the people," a statement on the party's Facebook page said.

The bloodshed deepened Egypt's political crisis, escalating the struggle between the army, which overthrew Islamist President Mohamed Mursi last Wednesday after mass demonstrations demanding his resignation, and the Brotherhood, which has denounced what it called a coup.

Instead of focusing on the handset?s features or the usual iPhone bashing, this time around Samsung?s creative agency has gone over the top in depicting a guy trying to make a phone call on a real apple. Realizing swiping across fruit makes no sense, the ad then switches to a happy scene where our hero operates a Galaxy S4. The not-so-subtle jab at Apple is plain weird, to put it mildly. California fireworks show that injured 39 had spectators scrambling and sheltering children

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. ? For many people gathered to watch July Fourth fireworks at a Southern California park, it took time to realize the wild chain of explosions weren't just part of the show.

But those up close Thursday night knew immediately that something was wrong. They included Paulina Mulkern, who had to shove her 4-year-old cousin under a lawn chair as shrapnel came flying then shielded a 7-year-old cousin with her body as scorching debris flew overhead.

"You feel the big old heat come right over your back," Mulkern said Friday, still shaking a day after the chain reaction of accidental explosions at an annual fireworks show that had been put on since 1970 in Simi Valley northwest of Los Angeles.

Thirty-nine people ranging in ages from 17 months to 78 years old were injured. Some had burns and shrapnel wounds, and some were trampled, authorities and hospital officials said. The injured included 12 children.

Only three remained hospitalized Friday night. One was being treated by specialists at a burn center in West Hills, and two more were in fair condition at a community medical center in Simi Valley, hospital officials said.

Mulkern said she went into shock after being hit by a flying piece of debris that left her with bruises and red marks on her back, trembling badly as she was carried to a road where rescuers stripped off most of her clothes and wrapped her in a blanket.

"I was really terrified," she said. "Every time someone launched a firework it got me into panic mode."

Cellphone videos captured a frantic scene among the crowd of 10,000. Fireworks exploded in big balls of sparks close to the ground, and smoke enveloped the park grounds. People screamed and ran. One mistaken man could be heard shouting someone was shooting.

Colleen Schmidt was watching the show with guests at her house across the street when it slowly became clear something went terribly wrong. After a few fireworks lofted perfectly in the sky, there was a big explosion on the ground and a volley of blasts.

Though a piece of shrapnel created a crater across the street then bounced and shot over nearby trees, Schmidt and her guests were lucky.

"We had 150 people here and not one single spark hit our house," she said.
